Chaos and Courage

Stealth mode activated, I slid off the couch and wedged myself into the tight space between it and the coffee table. With a blanket pulled up to my eyes, I became a human burrito, keeping a wary watch on the airborne intruder that had interrupted my evening relaxation.

Flutter, flap, dart. Flutter, flap, dart. The bat’s erratic flight path showcased its desperation to escape into the outside darkness. Adding to the chaos, Rosie and Buzz, my cats, had noticed the bat and were now in hot pursuit, their excitement evident. Wally, my dog, decided to join the fray, chasing the cats. Meanwhile, I lay on the floor, paralyzed by fear. The bat and I shared a mutual longing: its exit from my house. But this wasn’t going to happen unless I mustered some courage to help out.

It dawned on me that I’ve been that bat before, in need of support and calm to find my way. Just as we can help a bat when it finds itself in our home, terrified and uncertain, we can extend a helping hand to each other. By offering calmness and empathy during times of confusion, we can all get where we need to be.

Ultimately, with some strategic door-opening maneuvers and a few encouraging words (mostly directed at myself), I managed to orchestrate a successful exit strategy for my flying rodent-visitor. It swooped out into the night, leaving my heart pounding and a newfound appreciation for the absurdity of unexpected houseguests.
