Constant & Changing Beauty

The sunsets over Cypress Island have become my personal Earth-calendar, marking time’s passage in a way that feels both grounded and ethereal. As the weeks slip by, I’ve watched the sun shift its descent across the horizon, inching its way along the ridges of the island. What began as a far northern descent in the height of summer now moves ever so gradually south, painting the sky with an evolving palette of colors that never fails to capture my attention.

Each evening, the waters of Bellingham Channel mirror the sky, a reflective partner in this heavenly performance. Some days, the surface is glass, catching the last embers of sunlight and stretching them into fiery fingers that reach out toward me from across the channel. Other times, it ripples and distorts the reflection, turning the sunset into a fragmented patchwork of light, as if the day’s final breath is dissolving into the sea. The variations in light are endless—a blaze of orange one night, a soft lavender mist the next. Even the clouds, when they hang low and heavy, become canvases for bursts of pinks and golds.

In the year that I’ve been here, no two sunsets have ever been the same. And yet, they’ve always been beautiful. Always changing, just like life. It’s a truth that feels more profound when witnessed daily—how the most consistent thing in nature is its inconsistency. One day the sun dips behind Cypress in a burst of brilliance, and the next, it slides away behind a curtain of gray. But there’s beauty even in the muted tones of a cloudy sky, and I’ve learned to appreciate that as much as the vibrant hues. It’s a lesson in the nature of life itself.

Mindfulness teaches us to pause, to fully inhabit these moments as the day comes to an end. To simply watch, without expecting or hoping for a particular kind of sunset, but to take in whatever unfolds. Some days, the spectacle is breathtaking—colors so vivid they seem almost unreal. Other days, the sun disappears without much fanfare, leaving only a dim, fading glow behind. But in both instances, there’s something to be grateful for. The quiet, the beauty, the way the world winds down at the close of day. Gratitude helps me see the gift in each sunset, even the ones that are subdued, just as it helps me see the value in days that feel uneventful or challenging.

This past year, my first on Guemes, has shown me how much life can change. How we, like the sunsets, are always shifting, moving through different phases and seasons. And just as I’ve learned to appreciate the variations in the sky, I’ve come to embrace the changes in my own life with a sense of acceptance and curiosity. No matter what tomorrow’s sunset holds—whether it’s a burst of fiery brilliance or a gentle fade into twilight—I look forward to witnessing it. Because with each one, there’s the promise of a moment to savor, a quiet reminder of life’s ever-changing beauty, and that, in itself, is an excellent way to end the day.
