I had to be away from home recently. Not for a long time, but long enough to feel the magnetic pull of comfort and relaxation that only one’s home can provide. “There’s no place like home.” L. Frank Baum’s iconic quote from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz resonates with the truth that no two places are exactly alike.
Each location possesses a unique combination of geography, culture, and history that distinguishes it from others. Whether it’s the bustling streets of a city, the serene landscapes of the countryside, or the exotic charm of a foreign land, the differences are apparent in architecture, cuisine, and traditions. However, the connotation of Baum’s words is clear: despite the allure of diverse places, there is no place as comforting and welcoming as home.
The essence of home lies in the warmth of family, the companionship of pets, the friendliness of one’s neighbors, and the familiarity of one’s belongings. Home is a sanctuary where one can find solace and security, surrounded by cherished memories and personal items. It is where I can sit around in sweatpants and eat popcorn for dinner. It is where I can dance to 80’s pop music and take afternoon naps. It is where I can stay up as late as I want or go to bed as early as I feel. It is where I am my most authentic self. That is why I leave reluctantly, and why I return eagerly. I love being home. I have to work at creating a life that includes time outside of my house, my neighborhood. Mindfulness helps me.
Mindfulness serves as a powerful tool that can gently coax us out of the familiar embrace of our homes and encourage exploration of new experiences. When the comfort of home feels irresistible, mindfulness enables a shift in perspective; We can acknowledge and appreciate the security and tranquility of home, while simultaneously recognizing the potential richness of experiences awaiting us beyond its confines. Through mindfulness, we can cultivate a sense of curiosity and openness to the world outside our homes and neighborhoods.
The alchemy of place is complicated. There is, in fact, no place like home. But Jane Austen’s quote spoken by the insufferable Mrs. Elton in the novel Emma, better captures my heart: “There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” No inference necessary in that one. Baum’s line, “There’s no place like home,” implies a distinctiveness to each home, suggesting that, despite similarities, each home is truly one-of-a-kind. On the other hand, Austen’s quote underscores the universal quality of the comfort derived from staying at home. I’m home today so I’m going to put on my sweatpants, turn up the 80’s tunes and make a big bowl of popcorn for dinner. Then I will mindfully begin planning my next get-away.
